Why can't I go to my GP and get this test for free? Medicare and insurance funds can only be used for tests that a doctor deems clinically necessary for your immediate health or an ongoing medical condition. Doctors must follow strict rules, including documenting a valid reason for every test, and can be audited if they order unnecessary tests. This means if your TSH is in range, they will not do any further testing.
